Who I am

Hi world. I'm going to try this blog thing now.

You might ask why? Well, I think I lead an interesting life, and I do interesting things, and maybe, just maybe, there are people out there who want to know about the things I do.

What do I do? Well, in no particular order of significance:

First, I'm a mom, so I do things with my two young children all the time.
I like to sew for them, and I like to play with them, and we grow things and make things and bake yummy things together; things that could be interesting to you, world.

We play on bikes, but we do other things, too.
"Ninja Warrior" Cake. Wrinkles? um... intentional?
Second, I'm a graduate student. I'm working towards my PhD in chemistry at UC Berkeley, studying atmospheric chemistry and trying to understand the world. Gradate school is a challenging experience, but graduate school with kids? That brings it to a whole 'nother level...

My graduate work involves plants and bags.
Third, I'm a bicyclist. I've been car-free for many years, and life car-free has its own interesting moments. Life as a car-free mom is even more interesting. My family and I ride our bikes everywhere and it is a huge part of our lives. You wonder how kids can commute to school every day on a bike? You want to learn how to go grocery shopping without a car? How about camping trips? These are the types of things you can learn about through my page.

So what am I going to write about?

Ruffles on a dress.

I will talk about crafting - sewing, knitting and baking. I can share the items I make, and even show off the patterns I draft myself.
Pattern Testing the Violet Romper

My first attempt at pattern drafting. What a lovely model <3

I will talk about kids - things to do with kids, challenges of being a parent, life out and about with kids, and who knows what else. I'll probably brag a lot, and might complain a little at times, but as insightful as I can manage.

"The NOx Cycle"
I will talk about science - the process of graduate school as well as interesting science I come across in my life. I'm interested in climate change and anthropogenic impacts as well as solutions to the human-earth co-survival issue.

I will write about biking - biking to work, biking with kids, biking for vacation, social biking, and, well, riding bikes more and more.

Bike Everywhere!
Hanging out before a group bike ride, family style.

My posts will be full of words and pictures and funny stories, too. Stay tuned, this is the beginning of something special!
